NUGS reacts to increase in ‘national’ service personnel allowance

The leadership of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) following the increase in national service personnel allowance from GH¢559.04 to GH¢715.57 has commended the management of the National Service Scheme (NSS).
In a post sighted by AcademicWeek, NUGS said it since November 3 2022, has been in constant engagement with all stakeholders who matter in the conversation of a possible increase in the allowances of national service persons.
The commitment and advocacy we extended from the office of the CEO of the NSS Osei Assibey Antwi through to the high office of the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo have been fruitful after all
It adds to our satisfaction seeing this development after waiting for results for so long. We appreciate the relentless effort of Hon. Osei Assibey for standing with us throughout the advocacy,” the Union said in the social media post.
The national service personnel allowance increase from GH¢559.04 to GH¢715.57, according to the management of the Ghana National Service Scheme (NSS) will take effect from January this academic year.
“The National Service Scheme has secured government approval for upward adjustment of monthly allowances for National Service Personnel from GH¢559.04 to GH¢715.57, with effect from January 2023,” it said in a statement.
The Ghana National Scheme (NSS) in the press statement said the Controller and Accountant-General has been directed by the central government to give effect to new levels of the service personnel allowances.
“In effect, all National Service Personnel who are currently in active service are entitled to arrears for the difference in the upward adjustment from January 2023, and would be paid accordingly,” the management of NSS noted.
The approval of the national service personnel allowance according to the NSS was a result of a series of engagements between the National Service Scheme, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and the Ministry of Finance.
