PRINCOF petitions MoE for CoE trainees to feed themselves
The National Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) has appealed to the Minister for Education, Dr Adutwum to permit College of Education (CoE) trainees to cater for their feeding on campus effective November 7, 2022.
In a statement copied to AcademicWeek, the Principals said their decision follows the rapid hike in the price of food items, a situation it said is making it difficult for the management of various Colleges to feed the teacher trainees.
“Prices of all food items have shot up astronomically and food suppliers have refused to supply to government Colleges of Education because of the indebtedness of Colleges to these suppliers,” the Conference of Principals stated.
The National Principals added “a request for an upward review of the feeding grant paid to Principals has not been approved and it has become increasingly difficult for Principals to continue to provide three meals a day to students.
The management of Colleges of Education following the cost of food items has called on the Minister in charge of Education to accept their permission for College students to start feeding themselves in early November this year.
Meanwhile, the Executive Director for Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare has advised the government to use GH¢ 250 million budget spent on Colleges of Education teacher trainees feeding to recruit more teachers next academic year.
In a social media post sighted by AcademicWeek, the Education think tank Director said the trainees in the various government Colleges of Education across the country are mature enough to cater for their feeding while in school
“If I were an advisor to this gov’t, I would recommend that the GH¢ 250 million being spent on teacher trainees feeding allowance in 2022 be rather used to employ an extra 7,000 teachers,” Mr Kofi Asare stated in the post.
