The Senior High Schools selection register is a compilation of public Senior High/Technical Schools’ names put into four categories: Category A, B, C and D to assist BECE graduates in the selection of their preferred schools for placement.
Each of these school categories (A, B, C and D) has several secondary-level schools listed under them. These could be Senior High schools (SHS) Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS) or Technical Institutes in the country.
This academic year, Junior High School graduates who sat for the 32nd edition of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will commence the selection of school process from August 23, 2023, to September 4, 2023.
In a statement shared with AcademicWeek, the Education Ministry said it has produced a video explaining the schools’ selection guidelines for candidates. The schools’ selection video it said will be played on radio and television stations.
“The Ministry of Education has produced a video explaining the schools’ selection guidelines for candidates. This video will be played on various radio and television networks across the country,” the Ministry in Charge of Education stated.
In a related development, the management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has cautioned Heads of public Junior High Schools and teachers not to demand a fee for the 2022 second-cycle school selection register from students.
In a statement copied to AcademicWeek, the Ghana Education Service said it has supplied all District Education Offices with hard copies of the school register to aid the Junior High Schoo graduates in the selection of schools process.
“Be informed that the 2023 schools selection register is not for sale. GES has supplied all District Education Offices with hard copies of the register to aid the students in their school selection,” the management of GES stated in the release.
It also said the 2023 BECE school selection register has been uploaded on https://freeshs.net and is available for download, thus students who make a payment or buy from their school or teacher do so at their own risk.
“In addition, the register has been uploaded to https://freeshs.net. Kindly visit the site and download it. Do not buy from any school. You do that at your own risk,” the Ghana Education Service cautioned 2023 BECE graduates.
The Education Service likewise has also cautioned teachers to desist from taking money for the school selection register. According to GES, any Headteacher reported to be engaged in such an illegal act will be dealt with.
