Govt to operationalise 5 more STEM SHSs in 2023 – MoE PRO

Five additional Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Senior High Schools will be operationalised in the 2023 academic year, the Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Education (MoE), Kwasi Kwarteng has said.

Speaking in an interview monitored by AcademicWeek, the spokesperson said the 5 new STEM SHS this year will be added to the 2023 school selection for students who wish to pursue STEM courses to apply for enrollment.

“There are currently 10 of the 21st STEM schools in the country but 5 of them as of now are operationalised. In the next school selection and placement, the other 5 will also be operationalised,” the Education Ministry spokesperson said.

Citing the immense investment in STEM education by the government, he said the focus of the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum is to move the country from only grammar education to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

In a related development, the Ministry of Education has opened the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) schools selection portal for students who sat for the 2022 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

In a statement shared with AcademicWeek, the Education Ministry said the STEM placement portal gives access to the list of new STEM Senior High Schools 9SHSs) included in the 2023 school selection and placement process.

Aside from the list of the 21st century Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics second cycle schools, the Ministry said the portal also provides information on available STEM programs and their career pathways.

“It gives further details of existing Senior High Schools that would be offering STEM programs during the 2023 academic year,” the statement signed by the Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Education (MoE) stated.

Students with an interest in pursuing strictly Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics programs have been encouraged to visit https://stem-ssp.com.gh to select their preferred schools and corresponding programs.
