Producer of Scripps Spelling Bee announces date for 2023 contest

Barring any last-minute changes the 2023 Scripps Spelling Bee will commence on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, through to Thursday, June 1, 2023, the E.W. Scripps Company, the producer for the international competition has said.

In a blog post sighted by AcademicWeek, the company said the preliminaries stage of the contest will begin on May 30, 2023, with quarterfinals on Wednesday, May 31, semifinals on Wednesday, May 31 and finals on June 1, 2023.

To watch the spelling competition it said “ION Plus and Bounce XL are your streaming homes for live coverage of every round, including the Preliminaries, Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Finals! Coverage runs from May 30-June 1.”

As the 95th edition of the Scripps Bee, a total of 231 spellers from the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Department of Defense Schools in Europe. will demonstrate their spelling skills in the competition.

Earning their spots as national competitors by advancing through regional spelling bees other prospective spellers will also represent three countries outside the United States thus the Bahamas, Canada and Ghana.

Spellers will compete in four segments of competition to determine who will take home the Scripps Cup: the Preliminaries, Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Finals. All rounds of competition will be broadcast on ION platforms.

For their participation in the Bee, the producer of Scripps Bee says all competitors or finalists will receive a number of awards and prizes from the Bee and its prize sponsors including Merriam-Webster and Encyclopædia Britannica.

This year, three female spellers namely, N’Adom Darko-Asare, Mychelle Kumah and Janice Afiba Nketsiah after placing first, second and third positions respectively in 2023 The Spelling Bee competition will represent Ghana at the 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee (formerly the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee and commonly called the National Spelling Bee) is an annual Spelling Bee held in the United States of America (USA).

The Scripps Spelling Bee is run on a not-for-profit basis by The E. W. Scripps Company and is held at a hotel or convention centre in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area during the week following Memorial Day weekend.
