GTLE to be merged into Colleges of Education programmes – MoE

Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister in Charge of Education has hinted at the possibility of the Ghana teacher licensure examination (GTLE) being integrated into teacher education institutions’ including Colleges of Education programmes.
Speaking at a press briefing monitored by AcademicWeek, the Minister for Education said a committee has been set up to check on the selection and admission process of WASSCE graduates into public teacher education institutions.
The seven-member committee chaired by Deputy Education Minister, John Ntim Fordjour, Adutwum said is to examine teaching best practices and what works globally and also make recommendations to him for the right action to be taken.
The committee would also look at the quality of students being admitted into the teacher education institutions relative to the grade and programme of specialization at the senior high schools among other terms of reference.
Membership of the committee are representatives of the Head of a Public College of Education, Prof. Samuel Atintonoo, from Accra College of Education, the Head of a Private College of Education, Rev Msgr Louis Kofi Tuffour, Christ The Teacher College of Education.
The others are the Chief Director at the Ministry of Education, Mrs Mamle Andrews, a representative from institutions that trained teachers, Prof. Jonathan Fletcher, University of Ghana, a professor of testing, Prof. Eric Anane, University of Cape Coast, and Mr Lawrence Sarpong of NTC.
The seven-member committee, the Minister for Education and Bosomtwe Member of Parliament said has four weeks to submit its report to the leadership of the Ministry of Education (MoE) for the necessary action to be taken.
As part of an effort to ensure qualified WASSCE graduates are admitted into various government teacher education institutions, the Education Minister said his outfit is considering an introduction of entrance assessment.
“The Ministry of Education (MoE) is looking at a possible introduction of entrance assessment as part of the selection process for teacher education admission,” Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum told stakeholders at the press briefing on GTLE.
