KTI to be converted into a tertiary institution – Adutwum

Minister in charge of Education and Bosomtwe Member of Parliament, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum says processes are underway for Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) to be converted into a tertiary institution in the coming academic years.

Speaking in an interview monitored by AcademicWeek, the Education Minister said an estimated amount has been given to Ghana by Germany as part of efforts to improve and enhance technical education in the country.

“We have received some amount from Germany to improve the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) just like we have done in some technical schools. Some parts of KTI after the improvement will be a tertiary institution,” he stated.

When fully converted into a tertiary institution, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum noted Senior High School graduates can further their studies at the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) to be awarded a certificate and Diploma in Engineering.

In a related development, three public Colleges of Education thus; Akrokeri College of Education, Presbyterian College of Education at Agogo and Accra-based Accra College of Education are now fully-fledged universities.

The conversion of the government-accredited Colleges to universities comes after the government submitted a document to cabinet for 50 to 100-year-old Teacher Training Institutions to be upgraded to full-fledged university status.

“After operating for between 50 and 100 years, why must such Colleges continue to be affiliated to other universities when they qualify to be autonomous,” the Minister for Education told members of a teacher union at a meeting.

The purpose of the conversion an official of the Education Ministry told AcademicWeek is to strengthen teacher education and training to improve classroom performance to produce quality teachers to teach in various schools.

“The move by the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission to upgrade some government Colleges to universities will help improve quality education delivery,” the Ministry of Education (MoE) staff stated.
