More exam malpractice recorded at 2023 WASSCE centres – WAEC
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) following reports of examination malpractice at various WASSCE centres says it has put in place adequate measures to ensure the integrity of this year’s examination is protected.
Speaking at a press briefing, the Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi said a number of malpractices have been recorded in the ongoing 2023 edition of the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) across the country.

”Irregularities such as foreign materials found on candidates, smuggling of mobile phones and electronic gadgets into Examination Halls, Syndicate cheating, impersonation among others have been recorded so far
Some invigilators were found with photocopied solutions to questions which were being distributed to candidates in the examination hall. Some of the solutions were also deposited at the urinals for the candidates to pick them up.
“Those who were found culpable were apprehended by our monitoring teams and handed over to the Police,” the Public Relations Officer of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) told journalists at the press conference.
Reacting to the claim some candidates partaking in the examination are being intimidated by officials of the West African Examinations Council in the examination hall, the spokesman said no WAEC staff will intimidate a candidate.
Citing that eradicating examination malpractice in the ongoing examination is a shared responsibility, the non-profit-making organization official said some arrests have been made and investigations into other cases are underway.
A total of 447,204 candidates, representing 211,834 males and 235,370 females from 975 Senior High Schools are writing the examination. This figure indicates an increase of 5.8% compared to the 2022 entry figure of 422,883.
The Ghana version of the international examination is taking place at 834 centres across the country. A total of 60 subjects, comprising 4 core and fifty-six (56) electives are made available to prospective candidates to choose from.
The 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates which commenced on Monday, July 31, 2023, with the Visual Art Project work is expected to end on September 26, 2023.
