New GES DG appointment violates Education Act – Gyetuah

After calling for a review of the Ghana Education Service Director-General appointment criteria, Mr Gyetuah says Akufo-Addo’s decision to replace former GES Director-General, Opoku Amankwa with Eric Nkansah violates the Education Act.

In a discussion with an Editorial Staff of AcademicWeek, the Director of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools said Mr Eric’s appointment violates the Education Standards and is also in contravention of teacher professionalism.

“This is in total violation of the educational standards and also in contravention of teacher professionalism as long as Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 ( Act 1023) is concerned,” Obenfo Gyetuah told AcademicWeek.com.

Asked if he supports the National Association of Graduate Teachers’ (NAGRAT) decision to reject Dr Nkansah’s appointment, the GNACOPS Director said “teachers know what is good for them, they want a teacher, not a banker.”

“Aside from having no education-related background, even in the banking sector where he has worked, there are ranks, you can’t just be promoted to a managerial position if you have not done certain rubrics,” Kwasi Gyetuah said.

The 41-year-old banker and lecturer of the Kumasi Technical University joined the Ministry of Education (MoE) in April 2021 on secondment from the Kumasi Technical University, where he served as a Senior Lecturer for about 8 years.

He holds a PhD in Financial Economics from the University of Zululand, South Africa, a Master of Business Administration (Finance) from KNUST Business School, Ghana, and B. A (Hons) Economics from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana.

Meanwhile, Prof Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa following the termination of his appointment as the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) by President Akufo-Addo has bid his colleagues at the Education Service farewell.

In a goodbye message sighted by AcademicWeek, the KNUST Professor said “I wish to take this opportunity to thank every one of you for your dedication and the extremely good work relationship that existed between us.

Mr Kwasi Opoku Amankwa continued that “I highly appreciate your unfathomable love for me. We worked as a team and together we’ve changed the face of not only pretertiary education but also Ghana Education Service (GES)
