‘New’ Senior High School courses to be introduced – MoE

Minister of Education, Dr Adutwum says plans are underway for new Senior High School courses to be introduced in the second cycle education system to develop student’s creative ability and improve the science-to-humanities ratio.

At a meeting with stakeholders, he said the educational reforms will see students study courses like aerospace engineering, environmental science, computer science, manufacturing, biomedical sciences and global studies and creative arts

The Education Minister indicated Curriculum Writing Group had been formed adding that stakeholder engagement is underway on the new Senior High School courses which are part of the new secondary career pathway for the country.

“The government had drafted partnership guidelines between high schools in Ghana and other schools for exchange programmes to learn from best practices and inculcate the knowledge acquired into the educational system,” he said.

Adutwum also disclosed Ministry of Education has established the National Education Institute to run tailor-made courses in school leadership and management for practising and potential teachers to improve learning outcomes.

The establishment of the Institute he said follows research conducted by the National Teaching Council that revealed 94.5 per cent of headmasters or headmistresses in public schools have no formal training in school management.

“The Education Ministry through the National Education Institute and the National Inspectorate Authority soon will organise training for all heads of public schools to equip them with modern knowledge in school administration

This cannot happen in this 21st century that you can become a headmaster or headmistress of a government school without formal training,” the Minister for Education told Civil Society Organizations at a crunch meeting.

In another story, the Ministry of Education (MoE) will hold the 5th edition of the National Education Week at the Accra International Conference Center from Monday, 10th October to Friday, 14th October 2022.

On the theme ‘Re-Assessing Educational Policies for Effective Service Delivery and National Transformation. The program is to re-assess Ghana’s Education Systems through the lens of its policies and key interventions for effective service delivery and national transformation.

The weeklong event will witness presentations and discussions on achievements of the Government’s key policies and programmes in the Education Sector, including STEM Education; ICT in Education; Free Senior High School; and Technical and Vocation Training.
