NTC reveals 2023 subject-based teacher licensure exam pass mark

The management of the National Teaching Council (NTC) says the pass mark for the maiden edition of the subject-based Ghana teacher licensure examination (GTLE) is 50% and not 70% as widely circulated on social media platforms.
A spokesman for the Ghana Teaching Council, Denis Osei-Owusu in an interview monitored by AcademicWeek said the 70% pass rate suggested by a member of the Council committee is yet to be approved by management of his outfit.
A total of 20,181 candidates representing 10,733 males and 9,448 females are sitting the maiden subject-based teacher licensure examination administered by the National Teaching Council (NTC) at 52 examination centres.
Dennis Osei-Owusu giving an update on the maiden examination said 14,438 of the candidates are trainees from the 46 public Colleges of Education while the remaining 9,448 of them are from various universities.
He said Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), a centre for the exam has the highest number of candidates, recording 1,501 while Tumu College of Education centre has the least, with 58 candidates.
The Head of Public Relations of the NTC, Dennis Osei-Owusu gave the assurance that the Ghana teacher licensure examination would be conducted based on what the candidates specialised in and so there would be no cause for alarm.
Since its introduction in September 2018, the maiden subject-based Ghana teacher licensure examination (GTLE) is the 11th edition of the national examination to issue teacher education graduates a professional license to teach.
The subject-based examination according to the National Teaching Council (NTC) means that the teacher trainees are going to be examined on their area of specialisation, unlike previously when it was a generalised examination.
The 70% pass rate pending approval comes after the Deputy Director for TVET Service, Dr David Prah said the current 50% pass mark for the licensure examination to issue tertiary education graduate teachers teaching license is low.
Speaking at a meeting to discuss the quality and trend analysis of the GTLE, he said the 50% pass mark is equal to 50% of the teachers licensed to teach hence the need for NTC to increase the pass mark for the licensure examination.
“I am happy that our teacher union leaders are with us. The pass rate and percentage for passing I believe is suspect and questionable. 50% for a teacher to step into a classroom, meaning that he has a 50% deficit which is disastrous and needs to be revised,” he said.
