WAEC explains 2022/2023 WASSCE scripts marking process

The West African Examinations Council before it releases WASSCE results says examiners are trained nationwide to use the West African Senior School Certificate Examination marking scheme for the WASSCE scripts marking process.

In a discussion with AcademicWeek.com, an official of the Council said that dockets containing the examination scripts without the names of Senior Hig Schools on it are allocated randomly to examiners to ensure a fair marking.

“Scripts are also swapped from one region to another. This means the WASSCE answer booklets or scripts from the Ashanti region may be sent to let’s say the Northen region and vice versa for the regions,” the staff of WAEC said.

The marking of the international examination (WASSCE) scripts the official of the non-profit-making organization (WAEC) told AcademicWeek’s Editorial Staff is done under the surveillance of Chief examiners and team leaders.

“The WASSCE papers after the exams are packed into a packet and swapped across the 16 Regions, so whenever you see the packet you will not be able to identify whether is for this or that school, the packets are anonymous,” he stated.

Explaining how WASSCE for School scripts are marked each year, he said the Council’s Chief Examiners from the five-member countries of WAEC meet and draw a national marking scheme to be used by examiners in various countries.

“Such international prelim coordination meetings are normally held in Greater Accra and Lagos. The RPCC after the meeting determine the duration of the marking process and when to expect the release of the results,” the WAEC staff said.

More than 10,000 examiners each year he said are contracted to mark the WASSCE for School scripts of students who registered to sit for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination conducted by the not-for-profit institution.

“Over 10,000 examiners across the country participated in the marking of the 2022 edition of the WASSCE for Ghanaian students only. The marking usually starts 3 weeks after the administration of the WASSCE,” the official disclosed.

Unlike last year when the contact details of some examiners contracted to mark the 2021 WASSCE leaked in the public domain, he said the management of the Council this year put in place measures to ensure no such case is recorded.
