YEA announces salary of SHS graduates nurse assistants

The management of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) says SHS graduates to be recruited to help nurses at various CHPS compounds in rural communities in the country will be paid not more than GH¢400.00 as a monthly salary.

In an interview with Accra-based Citi TV monitored by AcademicWeek, the Head of Corporate Affairs of YEA, Emmanuel Kwasi Afriyie said his outfit is well-equipped to pay the 5,000 Senior High School graduates to be employed this year.

“Since the time we had lawyer Justin Koduah as CEO till the time of my current boss, there has never been any instance where our beneficiaries have come out to complain about unpaid allowances. We manage our programmes very well

We are fully prepared to sustain the programme,” the Employment Agency official, Emmanuel Kwasi Afriyie told the host of Citi TV’s ‘Point of View’ show adding that programme beneficiaries will be paid an amount of GH¢400.

Meanwhile, Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has called on the management of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) to halt the training and recruitment of SHS graduates for the CHPS compounds.

The Association in a release copied to AcademicWeek said the decision is very disturbing and a clear displacement of Ghana’s priority to achieve the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3) and Universal Health Coverage by 2030.

“The YEA should as a matter of urgency halt the training of the SHS graduates since the recording of medical history and symptoms, conducting a physical examination can only be provided by trained health personnel,” it stated.

GRNMA further said any training of SHS graduates which does not conform to standards set out by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (N&MC) will pose a threat to the lives of all Ghanaians especially those in our rural communities.

“The government for that matter should recruit the thousands of nurses and midwives waiting to be employed especially the over 10,000 Nurse Assistants who have already accessed the MOH recruitment portal,” GRNMA noted.

The Association has therefore urged all nurses and midwives waiting to be posted and those waiting for the MOH recruitment portal to be opened to remain calm leadership of the Association engages the central government.
