Entertainment making it hard for schools to win NSMQ – Prof Elsie
After ending the 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann says entertainment is preventing more public Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the country from qualifying to compete and win NSMQ
In an interview with Starr FM, the NSMQ mistress said that the contestants from Presbyterian Boys Secondary School are mostly well-prepared for the Science and Maths quiz because of the system put in place by their school.

Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann added that while PRESEC students, for instance, are constantly having quizzes in their school, other schools seem to be more vested in entertainment, which gives the Boys’ school an advantage over them.
“It seems as if their contestants are preparing well before they even get to the school. So, some young junior high school student or basic school student is watching this programme and observing how the school is doing and deciding that they are going to go to that school.
“These days there are all kinds of quiz programmes… they are practising there. By the time they get to PRESEC to come and join that team, they already have a head start. Compare this to a girl’s school that is picking their contestants after mock in the final year. Are they on the same playing field?” the Science and Maths quiz (NSMQ) mistress quizzed.
The professor added “So, they have the structures in place. At PRESEC right now, I’m sure they have different teams and they didn’t start this just yesterday… when other schools are singing and dancing, these people are doing quiz programmes in the school.”
Her comment comes after Presbyterian Boys Second School (PRESEC) outperformed Opoku Ware School and Achimota School to win the 2023 edition of the National Science and Mathematics Quiz (NSMQ) organized by Primetime Limited.
Winning the competition for the 8th time, The All Boys Senior High School ended the final round 5 with 40 points against Achimota School’s 28 points as silver medalists and Opoku Ware School’s 23 points as bronze medalists.
The Presbyterian Boys Secondary School (PRESEC) was awarded GH¢70,000 for winning the 2023 edition of the NSMQ with Achimota School receiving GH¢50,000, and Kumasi-based Opoku Ware School receiving GH¢35,000.
