Claudine Gay became the first black president of Harvard and the second woman to hold that position. Her period as president started on July 1, 2023. She succeeded Lawerence Bacow. Before assuming the position of the presidency, Gay was the Dean of Social Studies, and then the Edgerley Family Dean of the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

After six months of being the president of Harvard, Gay announced her resignation on 2 January 2024. Her resignation came after she was scrutinized for not responding to antisemitism on campus following the 2023 Hamas attack on Israel.

Her resignation letter read: “It is with a heavy heart but a deep love for Harvard that I write to share that I will be stepping down as president. “It has been distressing to have doubt cast on my commitments to confronting hate and to upholding scholarly rigor – two bedrock values that are fundamental to who I am—and frightening to be subjected to personal attacks and threats fueled by racial animus.” Alan Garber, the provost of Harvard, became interim president.

According to information online, she was born in 1969 or 1970. The specific date she was born is unknown. She was born in New York City to Haitian immigrants.

Her educational achievements include the Anna Laura Myers Prize for the best undergraduate thesis in economics from Stanford University. Gay earned her Ph.D. in 1998 from Harvard, where she won the university’s Toppan Prize for the best dissertation in political science.

She is the cousin of author Roxane Gay.

Husband

Her husband is Christopher Afendulis. Christopher is an information systems analyst at Stanford University’s Department of Health Research and Policy.
