Over 2.2m candidates from 5 countries sat 2022 WASSCE – WAEC

A total of 2,276,112 candidates from the five member countries of the West African Examinations Council sat for the 2022 edition of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), the management of WAEC has said.
The non-profit-making organization (WAEC) announced the number of final year second cycle school students who participated in the 2022 WASSCE at its International Excellence Awards for the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2022.
“297 out of 2,276,112 candidates who sat for the WASSCE (SC) 2022 in the five member countries of WAEC qualified for consideration for the Excellence Awards,” an official of the Examinations Council disclosed at the 2022 WASSCE event.
The Council awarded two Ghanaian students, Alex Manu and Benjamin Eyram Nana Kwame Degbey both former students of St. James Seminary Senior High School, Sunyani as the best 2022 WASSCE for School candidates.
Alex Manu and Benjamin Eyram Nana Kwame Degbey received the 1st and 2nd prizes at the International Excellence Awards for WASSCE School. Chiomo Blessing Obidigo from St. Pauls Academy, Jos Plateau State, Nigeria, placed 3rd.
The awards were presented to the deserving candidates at the Opening Ceremony of the 71st Annual Council Meeting held in Banjul, President of The Gambia, H.E. Adama Barrow, was the Guest of Honour at the WASSCE ceremony.
Also present were the Chairman of the Council, Prof. Ato Essuman, the Registrar to the Council, Mr Pateh Bah, and Council members from the five West African Examinations Council (WAEC) member countries.
The Ghanaian delegation was led by the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Dr Eric Nkansah, Nana Appiagyei Dankawoso I and Ghana’s Non-Council Member on the Board of Trustees of the WAEC Endowment Fund.
The International Excellence Awards was instituted in 1985 to honour candidates with outstanding performance in the Council’s Senior High School Certificate examinations also known as WASSCE for School Candidates.
The awards are sponsored by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Endowment Fund. The 71st Annual Council Meeting was held from Monday, 13th to Friday, 17th March 2023 in Banjul, The Gambia.
