EduWatch react to 2023 BECE results cancelled over mobile phones
Africa Education Watch following the release of this year’s BECE results has described as good the decline in the number of candidates whose BECE subject results were cancelled for possessing mobile phones in the examination hall.
Citing the number of cancelled Basic Education Certificate Examination subject results of Junior High School students who sat for the national examination from 2021 to 2023, the education think tank said there is room for progress.

“The number of candidates whose BECE subject results were cancelled for possessing mobile phones: 2021 – 46, 2022 – 73 and 2023 – 42. The decline looks good; room for progress,” EduWatch said in a post sighted by AcademicWeek.com.
WAEC cancelled the subject results of 312 school candidates and 3 private candidates for bringing foreign materials, thus, prepared notes, textbooks and printed materials into the examination hall or colluding with other candidates.
The entire results of 41 school candidates and 1 private candidate have also been cancelled for possession of mobile phones in the exam hall. It has also withheld the subject results of 180 school and 4 private candidates for various suspected offences.
The entire Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results of 110 school candidates and 2 private candidates West African Examinations Council in the blog post indicated had been withheld for various suspected offences.
The candidates who sat for the national examination according to the management of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) can check their 2023 BECE for School and Private results at https://eresults.waecgh.org.
In a related development, the scripts of 22,270 prospective Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) students in certain subjects are being scrutinized by the West African Examinations Council for reported cases of mass cheating
WAEC in a blog post sighted by AcademicWeek.com indicated the provisional 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School and Private results may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of investigations.
WAEC has also cautioned stakeholders particularly students who sat for the examination to be wary of fraudsters who ‘promise to upgrade the BECE results for a fee saying “candidates are to note that WAEC results are secured and can be authenticated.”
The BECE scripts scrutiny comes after the non-profit-making organization during the conduct of the national examination named and shamed some Junior High Schools it said were reported to be cheating in the BECE.
Ended on Friday, August 11, 2023, a total of 600,714 candidates, comprising 300,323 boys and 300,391 girls from 18,993 Junior High Schools are participating in the 2023 BECE which commenced on Monday, August 7, 2023.
“The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for Private Candidates recorded a total entry figure of 1,839 candidates. This was made up of 942 males and 897 females.
Fifteen centres, mostly in the regional capitals, were used for the conduct of the examination. Out of the total number of candidates who entered for the examination, 61 were absent.
