GES introduces 1st and 2nd placement system in BECE 2023 CSSPS

The Ghana Education Service (GES) as part of an effort to ensure the smooth computer placement of candidates who sat for this year’s BECE into their preferred second-cycle school has introduced a 1st and 2nd placement system.
Explaining the new placement system, an official of the Free SHS Secretariat said candidates are required to select 6 schools at the first placement section and 5 schools at the second placement section on the schools’ selection form.
“This year, final year Junior High School graduates who participated in the 2023 BECE are mandated to select 11 Senior High Schools, thus 6 at the first placement section and an additional 5 at the second placement section.
If a candidate is not placed into any of the selected 6 schools, he or she will be placed into any of the 5 schools he/she selected at the second placement section on the school selection form,” he said in an interview monitored by AcademicWeek.com.
Asked if self-placement will be used in this year’s computer school placement, the Free SHS official said “Candidates who do not get placement into any of the 11 schools will be given the opportunity to do self-school placement.
A total of 600,714 candidates, comprising 300,323 boys and 300,391 girls from 18,993 Junior High Schools participated in the 2023 BECE for School Candidates which began on Monday, August 7, 2023, to Friday, August 11, 2023.
With regard to the 2023 BECE for Private Candidates, a total entry figure of 1,743 candidates was recorded. This is made up of 889 males and 854 females. This year’s figure is 5.4% higher than the entry figure of 1,132 for 2022.
The 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School Candidates was held at 2,137 examination centres across the country, while 15 centres mainly in the regional capitals were used for the BECE for Private candidates.
To ensure the smooth and successful conduct of the 2023 BECE for School and Private, A total of 2,137 supervisors, 2,000 supervisors and 21,027 invigilators were tasked to oversee the administration of the national examination.

1 Category A school, 2 Category B schools and at least 2 Category C schools
