GES suspends Tug of War and Pillow Fight in basic & high schools
The management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) after it approved Tug of War and Pillor fight as games to be played by students at the Pre-Tertiary Education level has suspended the two sports for further consultations.
The suspension comes after the Federation of Tug of War/Pillow Fight earlier petitioned the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Eric Nkansah to introduce the Tug of War and Pillow Fight in public schools nationwide.

GES following the sports endorsement directed the Federations to liaise with the PE & Sports Unit to enable them to plan and organize how to roll out the programmes and activities for the introduction of the physical games.
“Regional Directors are requested to inform Metro, Municipal and District Directors and Heads of Second cycle Institutions that approval has been granted for the introduction of Tug of War and Pillow Fight in our schools,” it said.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) in a statement added that “it is the expectation of Management that the Federations will strictly adhere to the directives to ensure smooth and continuous running of the sports in our schools.”
But a letter signed by Acting Deputy Director-General of Ghana Education Service, Kwaku Owusu said the two games are no longer part of the sporting activities of government basic and second cycle schools in the country.
“Reference is made to our letter GES /DD-G (MS)23/125 dated 18th May 2023 on the approval to introduce Tug of War/Pillow Fight as Sports in the Basic and Second Cycle Schools in the country
We wish to inform you that the Management of Ghana Education Service is, by this letter, suspending the introduction of the two games for further engagements. Thus, our approval of your request is withdrawn forthwith
