GES to blacklist 2023 BECE unqualified JHS students from Free SHS

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has tasked heads of Junior High Schools to submit attendance reports of first and second-year Junior High School (JHS) students who absented themselves during the period of the 2023 BECE.

The Daily Graphic in a post sighted by AcademicWeek said all regional, metro and district directors of Education have been directed to provide names of attending and absent students from Monday, August 7th to Friday, August 11th, 2023.

“Furthermore, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has mandated that all school heads in both public and private schools should submit the names of JHS one and two students,” the Graphic newspaper indicated in the blog post.

The GES according to Graphic has required the attendance records of all JHS 2 students in the 2021/2022 academic year to track the attendance of students who took the 2023 BECE in August, during the 2021/2022 academic year.

Some education experts who spoke to Graphic on the development say the Ghana Education Service (GES) decision is to identify unqualified first and second-year students who “absented themselves from class and sat for the 2023 BECE

They also say the directive to all regional, metro and district directors of education is to subsequently disqualify them from entering Senior High School in Form One, sanctioning them or sanctioning school heads who aided in that action.

The provisional results of Junior High School students who sat for the 33rd edition of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) are anticipated to be released in late October 2023 and the first week of November 2023.

A total of 600,714 candidates, comprising 300,323 boys and 300,391 girls from 18,993 Junior High Schools participated in the 2023 BECE for School Candidates which began on Monday, August 7, 2023, to Friday, August 11, 2023.

With regard to the 2023 BECE for Private Candidates, a total entry figure of 1,743 candidates was recorded. This is made up of 889 males and 854 females. This year’s figure is 5.4% higher than the entry figure of 1,132 for 2022.

The 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School Candidates was held at 2,137 examination centres across the country, while 15 centres mainly in the regional capitals were used for the BECE for Private candidates.
