GNAT distances ‘itself’ from 2021 SHS/TVET placement fraud
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has debunked the claim indicating itself staff was the cleaner who was captured as a middleman in the investigative documentary by The Fourth Estate on SHS/TVET placement fraud.
GNAT’s comment comes after the Ministry of Education said that the janitors and security personnel captured in the documentary were not employees of the Education Ministry as told by the Fourth Estate but of the GNAT Hostel.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, Kwasi Kwarteng in a discussion monitored by AcademicWeek said the true identities of the two middlemen in the video were known after a preliminary investigation conducted by his outfit.
“It was not the cleaner of the Ministry of Education. What the Education Ministry did was, it rented a private facility at GNAT Hostel and use it as a resolution centre. “So they were cleaners of the Hostel and not at the Ministry,” he stated.
But reacting to the spokesman for the Ministry of Education’s allegation, the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers in a social media post said the claim is clear propaganda to tarnish the image of the GNAT.
“He is not an employee of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) or the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Hostel. Do your checks well. Do not drag us into the scandal,” the leadership told Education Ministry.
Speaking further on the allegation, the general secretary of the Association of Teachers (GNAT), Mr Thomas Musah said the management of the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) are ungrateful.
“The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service are ungrateful if, for all the things we have done for them, they can turn back and reward us this way we want to tell them they are ungrateful,” the GNAT secretary stressed.
Asked what will be the next action of the teacher union on the computer school placement fraud allegation, Mr Musah said his outfit at the appropriate time will respond to the claim by the Education Ministry and Ghana Education Service.
“In the coming days, they will hear from us, and we will respond to their allegation levelled against the Ghana National Teachers Association (GNAT) because the place they are not giving us anything,” the teacher union member said.
Describing the Ministry in charge of Education Public Relations Officer, Kwasi Kwarteng’s comment as unfortunate the leadership of the Teachers Association has called on the Minister for Education, Dr Adutwum to reprimand the spokesman.
“We want the Director-General of GES and the Minister for Education to come out publicly. They must reprimand him or else we will respond and if we are going all out and anything happens Kwasi Kwarteng should be blamed,” Thomas noted.
