WAEC puts 22,270 BECE pupils scripts under scrutiny over cheating
The scripts of 22,270 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) pupils in certain subjects are being scrutinized for reported cases of mass cheating, the management of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has said.
WAEC in a blog post sighted by Thisterm.com indicated the provisional 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School and Private results may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of investigations.

WAEC has also cautioned stakeholders particularly students who sat for the examination to be wary of fraudsters who ‘promise to upgrade the BECE results for a fee saying “candidates are to note that WAEC results are secured and can be authenticated.”
The BECE scripts scrutiny comes after the non-profit-making organization during the conduct of the national examination named and shamed some Junior High Schools it said were reported to be cheating in the BECE.
A spokesman of WAEC, John Kapi speaking to journalists said St John Bosco Basic School, Trinity Lutheran School, Oxford School Complex in Dunkwa-On-Offin and Ashanti Nkoranza D/A JSS were schools engaged in malpractice.
In an interview with Daily Graphic, he said his outfit with the assistance of security personnel has picked up seven teachers, one of them an invigilator, at different examination centres for their involvement in examination malpractice.
The teachers he said were allegedly found either solving questions of the BECE or with phones and tablets in their possession, with answers to questions in the exam after they were captured on camera transmitting the materials to the students.

Albert Adu-Gyan a teacher of Oxford School Complex in Dunkwa-On-Offin was apprehended while capturing images of the Religious and Moral Education questions he had answered in a classroom located on the Dunkwa Senior High Technical School premises.
Kwarteng Asiedu Derick, who was an invigilator at the Ashanti Nkoranza D/A JSS, was caught allegedly with captured photos of the Integrated Science Paper Two that he had shared on a WhatsApp group called “Amabame Teachers Page” which had 21 participants
At Obuasi, three teachers arrested at one of the examination centres at the Kwabenafori Exams Centre, are currently at the Obuasi Central Police Station in relation to a video circulated last Monday by the Educate Africa Institute (EAI),” he said.
Ended on Friday, August 11, 2023, a total of 600,714 candidates, comprising 300,323 boys and 300,391 girls from 18,993 Junior High Schools are participating in the 2023 BECE which commenced on Monday, August 7, 2023.
