We take winning the Science and Maths Quiz as a project – PRESEC

Legon-based Presbyterian Boys Secondary School (PRESEC) after defeating Opoku Ware School and Achimota School to win the 2023 edition of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) says they take the competition as a project.

The headmaster of PRESEC, David Odjidja in an interview with Citi FM said “We take it as a project. Last year when we came with the 7th trophy, there were jubilations all over. But the next day, the boys started working towards this trophy.”

He explained that contestants for the NSMQ undergo intensive training for two years in order to prepare for the competition adding “The boys were selected in Form 1, two years ago. They have been working throughout vacations.”

“It was quite a terrible experience, especially when you are sitting right in the hall,” he said. “But the comfort was before the start of round 4, we had a great gap, and we were still counting our hopes on the final round.

Fortunately, we thank God Achimota School didn’t close the entire gap. We knew we could still trust God, but it wasn’t easy at all,” the headmaster of the eight-time winner of the NSMQ said in the interview monitored by AcademicWeek.

Commending parents of the PRESEC Science and Maths Quiz finalists Odjidja said “I want to thank all the parents of these boys, they have all done well. I want to also thank all stakeholders for supporting and associating with us.”

Winning the competition for the 8th time, The All Boys Senior High School ended the final round 5 with 40 points as against Achimota School’s 28 points as silver medalists and Opoku Ware School’s 23 points as bronze medalists.

Reacting to PRESEC’s win, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister for Education commended Primetime Limited, for initiating the National Science and Mathematics Quiz (NSMQ) for Senior High School (SHS) students in the country.

The Presbyterian Boys Secondary School (PRESEC) was awarded GH¢70,000 for winning the 2023 edition of the NSMQ with Achimota School receiving GH¢50,000, and Kumasi-based Opoku Ware School receiving GH¢35,000.

The 30th Anniversary edition of the National Science & Maths Quiz commenced on October 6, 2023. As a highlight of the celebrations, this year’s NSMQ was hosted in two distinct regions: KNUST in Kumasi and the National Theatre in Accra.

This historic occurrence marks the first time the National Championship spans across two regions, with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology as the venue for the Preliminary four stages and the grand finale at the National Theatre.
