Stakeholders consulted on ‘1st-yr’ SHS students prospectus – MoE
The Ministry of Education (MoE) following the selection of schools by students who sat for 2023 BECE says it has consulted all relevant stakeholders on the prospectus to be issued to first-year Senior High School (SHS) students.
A member of the committee tasked to review the Senior High School prospectus in an interview monitored by AcademicWeek said 2023 BECE graduates to be admitted into various second-cycle schools this year will be issued a national prospectus.

“We have engaged the head of schools, Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), parents, students, teachers, house mistress and house masters on the prospectus to be issued to students,” he said.
The member of the prospectus review committee added “This academic year, all Senior High Schools (SHS) will use what we have described as the national prospectus, no public second-cycle school will have its own prospectus.”
The 2023 edition of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School and Private Candidates was administered from Monday, August 7, 2023, through Friday, August 11, 2023, across the country.
A total number of 600,714 prospective candidates, comprising 300,323 males and 300,391 females from 18,993 government and private Junior High Schools (JHSs) participated in the national school examination.
With regard to the BECE for Private Candidates, a total entry figure of 1,743 candidates was recorded. This is made up of 889 males and 854 females. This year’s figure is 5.4% higher than the entry figure of 1,132 for 2022.
“For the school and private candidates, 21 subjects, comprising five (5) Core and sixteen (16) Electives were made available to prospective candidates.
In addition to the five (5) Core subjects, the school candidates were given the option of choosing four Electives to make a maximum of nine subjects,” the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) said in a blog post.
The 2023 BECE for School Candidates was held at 2,137 examination centres across the country, while fifteen (15) centres mainly in the regional capitals were used for the BECE for Private candidates on Monday, August 7, 2023.
