Following the rise in cases of indiscipline in schools particularly Senior High Schools, a spokesman for the Ministry of Education, Kwasi Kwarteng has said his outfit in due course will appoint a Dean of Disciplinary Affairs to address such matters.
In an interview monitored by AcademicWeek, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) said the Dean of Disciplinary Affairs will work for hand in hand with the Guidance and Counselling unit to ensure maximum discipline in second-cycle schools.
“The Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Adutwum has hinted Dean of Disciplinary Affairs to augment the work. We will have a person who will go against the accepted values and norms to ensure discipline in our schools,” Kwarteng said.
The move to set the Dean of Disciplinary Affairs comes after some eight female students of Chiana Senior High School verbally abused President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in a video which went viral in the 2022 academic year.
After a thorough investigation by a committee set up by the Ghana Education Service to probe the incident, the 8 students on the recommendation of the report submitted to the Director-General of GES, Eric Nkansah were dismissed.
A letter to the parents of one of the students explained that her conduct was “considered very undesirable and contrary to the acceptable standards of conduct generally required of any student in our Educational system in Ghana.”
The earlier dismissed final year Chiana Senior High School students currently have been asked to return to school by the Ghana Education Service to continue their secondary education after President Nana Addo Dankwa intervened.
Following a directive by the Ministry of Education for the 8 Chiana SHS girls to be recalled back to school, the management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) said they will be given an alternative sanction than the dismissal.
“The Ghana Education Service has referred the matter to the school’s disciplinary committee to explore alternative sanctions other than the dismissal,” the management of the Service said in the press release dated January 13, 2023.
